Today's Prompt: A favorite find while thrifting or antiquing...
I am not a regular at the thrift or antique stores, but around September or October of each year I start looking for some really random things. Crazy, and fun ideas require oddities and "junk," that I can artfully display with our Christmas Elves. Last year's list of odd things to find included: menorah, tent, palm tree, packing peanuts, and a fake carrot. Yes, I know it doesn't make any sense, but you can look back at last years fun during the month of December.

I am always tickled pink at the things that people donate; as someones trash, has just become a great find for our family! I love taking the boys to the Goodwill Store, as the trip teaches them a small lesson. I give them each a dollar, and let them pick out whatever they want to buy with that $1 bill. Last shopping trip, Mikey walked away with five books, and Ryan was really happy with a wind up toy car. Small things like that, have a huge impact on the boys, and Mikey has asked numerous times if we can go back to the "donate store." The kids were with  me, the last time we dropped of a few bags of old clothing to be donated. As we were loading the car, Mikey was full of questions about why we were giving away clothes to people we had never met. I explained that the items are resold, to help other little boys and girls, and their parents. I didn't think that my explanation had really sunk in, but sure enough Mikey grasped something from my story as he calls the Goodwill Store, the "donate store." (Funny how kids, even understand helping people is a good thing.) When we go on Mommy's "Treasure Hunts," the boys are very serious about walking away with the best deal they can find for their one dollar. Yes, most of the stuff is crap, or very well loved from the previous owner, but it makes for a fun outing and the boys are learning something.

What kinds of fun things are you looking for at thrift stores? Do you try to teach your younger kids about the value of a dollar? What is the most exciting thing you have found at an antique store?
