Today's Prompt: My child's favorite piece of clothing.... that I despise.

I can't say that I despise, anything the kids wear. My son Mikey's favorite pair of shoes, literally fell apart, as he loved them to much. The annoyance or part about the situation, that I despise, is that he still talks about them and it is almost 2 years later. Mikey will bring the shoes up at very random times and make comments like, "Hey Mommy, remember my Thomas Shoes, that YOU threw away..." or "Mommy, I wish we could find another pair of Thomas the Train shoes, but my feet are too big for all the ones we have tried on."

Yes, my son latched on to a pair of shoes, and wouldn't let them go. He wore them every where: splashed in puddles while wearing them, found mud to walk in while wearing them, once puked on them so they had a lovely smell for a few days, and loved that they had red flashing lights when he walked in them. He eventually broke them down, and I convinced him that they were only play shoes, and we would buy another pair of shoes to wear when not at home. When they finally just had enough, as the Velcro was gone, and the top of the shoe had a hole big enough so that I could see his sock covered big toe; it was time to throw them away. I did not do this horrible task in front of Mikey, but pitched them one night after he had gone to bed. He looked for his Thomas the Train shoes, for weeks. I finally had to tell him the truth, and he was devastated! I felt horrible, but it just had to be done, the shoes had been loved to the point that there wasn't much left to protect his feet.

Did your child latch on to a piece of clothing? Did he or she love a pair of shoes until they fell apart? Have they asked to wear a really mismatched outfit in public, which just made you cringe? Do you let your younger child, pick out there clothes?
