Mama Kat's Writing Workshop: Baking is Easy

Mama’s Losin’ It

This Week's Prompt: Describe something that comes easy to you.

What comes easy to me? I love to bake, and see the excitement of when something baked is carefully removed from the oven. There is something to be said for the art and precision needed, when it comes to baking. Of course there are things that make me nervous, and things I have yet to master! Why on earth is the classic apple pie so tricky? Who came up with the idea of meringue, and why does it taste so amazing, yet can go so horribly wrong? Baking takes skill, patience, and fine attention to the recipe, or you will have a disaster! Yet, I love baking and all of the challenges that go along with it.

Nothing is more enjoyable than including my kids, in the process of baking. Mikey enjoys helping me to measure, and pour each ingredient in the bowl. He loves the sound of the mixer, and watching everything combine under the hum and speed of the beaters. My youngest, just loves to clean up...meaning he likes to lick the spoons clean. I want to encourage and instill into my boys, that they too can bake!

Baking just comes naturally, and easy for me. Yes, it can be tricky, but a good baker knows to keep trying and never give up! I love everything about baking: the smells that invite you to the kitchen, the joy of a perfect cake, the fun in trying a new recipe, and knowing everyone will want to taste your hard work. (There is a natural ability that comes with baking, and I learned this at an early age!) If it was baking blue berry muffins in Home Economics or baking a chocolate cake with my Father, it just made perfect sense to me. I have many memories of baking from an early age, as it was nothing for me to whip up a batch of peanut butter cookies or brownies to share with friends in grade school. As time went on I learned that I could make things beyond cookies, and will never forget the first time I attempted to make cheesecake from scratch, and burned it beyond recognition! I knew my mistake, and nailed it the next time I tried to bake a home made cheesecake...all part of the learning curve. Baking is an art, but it can be easy!

What comes easy to you? Do you have a skill that you just thoroughly enjoy, as you were a born a natural? Is something easy for you, that others struggle to master?

  1. I love to cook and love to try new things in the kitchen. We've had our fair share of "dinner FAIL" around here, but for the most part it's kinda fun watching my kids enjoy falafel or something equally as exotic.

  5. You're right about precision! I love to just throw spices in when I'm cooking a dish, but I still don't have the patience it takes to carefully measure for baking.

  6. My childhood was full of baking. My mother loved it, and was great at it. I want that for my little girl.

I'm goo at writing and public speaking. And I love both. Kind of weird, huh?

  7. I can bake, but I don't love it. I do love cooking, though, and that does come easily to me. It's a good thing I don't love baking. I would do it all the time and then EAT everything!

  8. Macarons look absolutely terrifying but apple pie, I find that easy but I just hate peeling all those apples! ;)

  9. Baking most definitely did not come easy to me :) For me, it was taking care of my flowers. I did not grow up with a "green thumb" but was introduced to tending flowers through my mother-in-law. I love it and look forward to every summer when I can prick and prune my flowers to my hearts desire!
